Ease Your Baby’s Colic With a Baby Massage

Posted by on January 6, 2012

Colic is somewhat commonplace in babies during their first few months of life and there is a lot of confusion surrounding it. Colic can commence from when your baby is as little as three weeks old and can linger until they are as much as four months. In most cases, the condition will be improving by the time your baby reaches three months.

The symptoms of colic are difficult to miss and sadly, in some instances it can be so distressing that parents are unsure of what they can do to ease their baby’s pain. In some instances, it can be difficult to discover whether the baby has a more serious problem requiring medical advice or treatment, so if in doubt seek professional advice straight away. Your doctor will be able to organize tests to find out if there is anything more serious going on. Regrettably, there is currently no exact test available, to beyond any doubt pinpoint whether it is colic, but your doctor can at least ensure that the baby does not have a serious or life threatening problem.

There are certain ailments that may have similar symptoms as colic but are not, such as an obstruction in the intestinal tract or an infection in the abdomen or ear. Your doctor will be able to check for obstructions in the digestive system such as a hernia or bowel problems.

There has been a lot of fact-finding done on colic in infants and its causes but professionals are still uncertain of its exact cause. Research shows that it occurs in the abdominal area where there is trapped air that cannot be easily released, causing differing degrees of pain. A number of theories have been devised as to why colic occurs including the following:-

* Hereditary cause – numerous people believe that colic is handed down and that infants are more prone to suffer the condition when their parents did.
* Dietary cause – another belief is that it is brought about by the mother’s diet which affects the baby via the breast milk.

There is currently no cure for colic and the only thing that parents can do is to make their baby as comfortable as possible during a colic episode. An excellent way to help your baby during one of these episodes is by way of a baby massage which soothes their abdomen. A baby massage tutor will be able to inform you how to massage your baby and this will also help improve your bonding and closeness.
